11.10.06

I hardly have the luxury of time to surf the net these days.check my mail at leisure,do some surfing.now i can.today was, you know, like half day.went for the Creative Seminar in the afternoon.glad Justin let us go.In the morning, there wasn't really much. did some scanning for Nic, read some books, tried to expand Ambi Pur ideas that's all.
The seminar was ok.some were good some were ok.I'm starting to like Thai stuff? and their philosophy.indian stuff were shown too.and like the Thais, they were funny in their own sense.
i guess it's a Singapore problem.you know all the talk about us not having a culture/identity? i guess it's related to advertising too.like, our advertising more so westernised? trying to keep with them them.art direction and all.not like the Thais or Indians who have their own style and culture in their advertising.we do not have that.and that kept me thinking during the seminar.
have no got any briefs for the past 2 days.hmmm....and i dun think so for the next 2 days.
have a tummyache just now.and now.sigh.
first time since I started work that I had dinner at Ah Ma's house.i wanted to go there for dinner tonight but I did not stay for long.
trying to get my Crocs photos printed out.trying not to do things last minute at the last minute.
okay.still got the ache in the tummy.
have to get some stuff onto the logbook now.

and ya, i'm starting to like David Tao's music?
actually only his latest song la.tai4 mei3 li4.the more you listen the more you like the peaceful of it all.not like so much hype in Jay Chou's.

din blog yesterday cuz was quite tired.but i wrote in my diary!
just a short one la...
yesterday: 1. oops.can't rem what i did.haha.
let me blog about today first.
today quite slack.haiz.
in the morning i sketched out my ambi pur ideas properly and in the process of doing that halfway, i felt that they aren't that good.hmmm....and dunno when we are gonna show him too.
then started eye mo btl stuff.tried to think away of the 'eye' ideas.got eye drops and nth much else.
read some books.lunch.this place, wl, you have to access it by taking the overhead bridge.gave me a very old school canteen feel.like those old shopping centres where they have look-like-anyway-put-up stalls.but very long queues and nice food.i ate the economic rice and there were fishball noodles and chicken rice.....fruit juice ya.want to try the chicken rice.hee.anyway, im nt going to yogi hub ever again.chris and i got cockroaches up our pants.dunno if there were different cockroaches.but the food sucks too.run by china people.i have no biasness whatsoever.=_+
ya.then now we are waiting for the eye mo discussion, if there will be.and tmr we are going for the 4As talk.just at NTUC audi.and after lunch we went to the 4As office to pay.so coincidental, the person-in-charge was on the line with someone and mentioned 'jesvin yeo and ivan choo'.haha.chris and I laughed.lol.
ding tao wanted to meet for lunch today together with carol and kristine but not in time la.so i thought another day.heard the food at china square is good? tot it was pretty bad the last time i went to the place.hahaha...
the crocs person called me and reminded me to submit my stuff.lol.haiz......
ok what else.nth much.today was quite slack................
and i dun feel like doing anything oso.HOW?

hahahaha..........
laugh for what?

6.10.06

5th day at work-a relaxed day.
hardly any work to do.maybe it's because it's a Friday? it's also because most of the creatives are out.hmmm....should have
tried to tag along but then, i din know they were going out wot.maybe i din ask.lol.
morning- helped to scan some stuff for Suzana. yeah.i talked to someone new for the first time in 5 days. that's Suzana! she's the admin staff.presses the button which opens the door for us and doing some admin staff person. my english sounds wrong?lol.lazy to edit.
im in the office now! bored so read a few of their books.photocopied some useful ones.haha.after yesterday's photocopying of the whole book for them, i have learnt to use the color photocopier.it's COLOR.and free.haha.
wanted to go meet gina and the rest at Hougang but i tot i want to go Tanglin Camp. see how bah. so no lanterns to light tonite.i was thinking of those paper lanterns..nostalgic sia.oh nvm.
after those scanning and arranging in photoshop, i went to a new corner to think of more ideas for Polident. too bad i was too late but i tot the ideas were worth doing.so i just sketched them out nicely.maybe will email Justin and ask for his comments. lunch at subway.no fun.i dun mean at subway but we da bao cuz the place was damn small.we went downstairs, i mean Grey's downstairs, to eat.hahaha.
Justin came to have a small chat with us and cuz Annie had no brief when we asked, Justin just gave us a brief to do and we have to share ideas on monday.lalala...i suggested Ambi Pur and so we have to do that.hmmm.....
he said it's good to keep doing concepts and of cuz it's good la.like exercising? you have to exercise regularly?lol.
and i bought Kit Kat, Hello Panda and Pokey today.lol.all choc! and i ate one box of Pokey and Hello Panda just now.sigh.i missed my Chocolate.but i know im more discipline when i'm alone.weird hor.
not gg to the Crowbar awards.will only feel sucky during the whole thing, before the whole thing and after the whole thing.damn it.forget it.
Rinn and Catherine going to Korea! haha.of cuz i asked for presents! and gave a very direct hint. unlike how some people think that im too chim sometimes.lol.crap right.ok.
that's all.
wanna enjoy my weekend. =)

i don't miss anyone.

5.10.06

4th day at Grey.let's see.....
short and quick ok...

morning- very few people were at the office at 9am.went into Victor's room and had a talk.
he told me that next tuesday they will be putting up AXA Insurance's ambient on bus stops at 12am! we can go! ya.
then Anne entered the room and we asked if got any more briefs, not at the moment. =l

discussed Martell ideas with Nic. approved 2.then did the layout and settled that.
no discussion of Eye Mo ideas yet.
Martell was quite a trouble. printed a few A3s and had to do a number of changes. the last change made me quite wl but good la.
oh ya,called Francis in the morning to try get the exotic car. He was damn funny and his voice damn low. everything say can, can.haha.dunno whether in the end he will call me back not.lol.anw,i think the car is not needed anymore.(from what I heard)
while we were doing the Martell brief, Justin gave us another brief ard 12pm and we had to discuss our ideas at 430. it was for elderly people who have dentures. this stuff made sure their dentures kept stuck on their teeth when they ate hard food.haha.quite cool.we had to come up with ideas for a billboard.australia.
well, you know why im blogging so much now? cuz im quite free, still at Grey but no briefs to work on currently. and im quite free lah.relaxed.so can type more.
anyway, din get to lunch with Peggy today.
most of them da bao.
and we had a late lunch cuz you know why? we had to photocopy and bind a whole book.from national library.anyway at least i got to know how to photocopy quickly and how to operate the machine near the accounts dept and how to bind.well, Chris knew better so he taught me.haha.technical skills are essential you know.lol.
i finally found Yogi Hub!!!!!!! at stanley street! had my first organic meal of the whole week.i felt so happy and at the point of time i was quite hungry so i ate quite quickly.but i thought the food was a little more 'oilier' than Create's. maybe it's the Olive oil, said Chris.hahahahaha...
but happy that there's an organic store around the corner. ate beetroof brown rice set today.$5.left with $7.then had watermelon juice.lol.
had to rush through the ideas for the dentures product cuz had to make changes to Martell last minute so i presented only 1 or 2 lousy ideas.but nvm.can think more later.
well, for tonite i have no briefs to work on.sort of no motivation to go to the gym but have to!!!!! argh!
guess i will be leaving as soon as i finish typing this.hahhaa...
going home early doesn't mean slacking wot right.hah.

okok...i miss my kit kat leh.how.
lol.well at least got to talk to Peng Peng today.
ok loh.nth else.

First day of work

The logbook isn't working yet so i guess this entry is done just to present evidence that I started
work today? haha.anyway, wanna put down my thoughts too.everything!

(russell lee and Ms Peh may start reading from here till.....)

We took quite some time to settle down, cuz we had to wait till the person in charge arrived (he came after 9am i guess), startup our comps and connect it to the server. Anyway, we had more contact with Elsa, another art director, than Nic, the senior art director whom we were supposed to report to. But that's fine to me. no diff. Elsa told us to search for some images online for 2 campaigns that they were doing. One for AmbiPur and one for Sensodyne. We were halfway through comping the images when she said she just wanted the images, and many of them, so that she could choose. Then had some trouble printing them out on contact sheets cuz i set the resolution too high but she taught me and at least that was one thing i learned today. We spent almost the whole day doing this, and saw Justin once or twice or thrice but we did not talk. I guess he is a quiet guy and so am I. so....... =P
SO we did not show him our ideas. anyway he din seem too keen to talk to us. we are only interns. yup, so i will have to email him my ideas later and see what he says. if he does say anything. Nic saw our ideas but he did not comment on mine. I was busy with getting the printing right and left him alone to look through my ideas and when i turned around, he left already. whatever that means....hahaha.....
anyway we left at 730pm. i din feel really tired except that my eyes did hurt a bit from staring at the powerbook for so long. din feel that i really learnt anything yet. but the people were ok.quite nice. and there is a special staircase that leads to............the toilet.
we sat in an area which held the cutting board area, 2 ladies whom i guess are designers and admin? (oops...no offense just guessing) and pengpeng. was quite surprised that the space each staff had was so small, especially peng peng when he is the junior AD right.haha..
we had lunch at lau pa sat. sucked. still looking for any nearby organic shops.
i was hoping to be able to walk around the office, talking to people and asking if they needed help. but i din walk around a lot, and there wasn't really many people. when there were people, they seemed busy and those seniors were in their rooms with the doors closed so how to ask??
almost everyone was wearing jeans and tee shirt, casual wear, so ok la.
the toilet has nice graphics, except that the graphics are like patterns and repeated so was quite boring. anyway i went to the toilet i think 4 times. drank lots of water. i want to.
and something interesting! the 2 ladies sitting around us listen to Chinese music! around lunch time one of them turned the volume on lee hom's songs! and then later there were more chinese songs and then........Jay Chou!!!!! hahahahahaha.........
the music just broke the silence that made the whole place so sian.
Grey is a very corporate place. i dun feel the creative vibes at all. and we din even get to lunch with the people there. at first, that kept me wondering. then i guessed, oh well, we are new right. no shou2 wot.hah.
was unable to find any organic shops around shenton way. hmm...will keep finding....
anyway, after we got the images and printed them out, we waited to Elsa to finish her discussion so that we could submit them. so while we waited, quite a few of them left already and the place was quite quiet and nice, especially at the corner we were in. and we started to think of ideas. it was quite a nice short half and hour. the silence. the air con.nice. but ideas not really that nice yet.sigh.
ok.today wasn't really that hectic as i thought.but it's the first day only. hope to learn more stuff, get involved in brainstorming sessions? talk to more people. maybe should start with one first.hmmm...Elsa? i just can't stand facing the comp the whole day cooped up in the corner. i guess that's not what an intern shd do right...
hwee peng said there are briefs lying around everywhere and it is up to us to take them to do..hmmm...but i dun see briefs lying around and even if they were lying around, how would i know they are briefs that have to be done? ask? lol....a bit pai seh thou...try ok! =)
just dun like to waste time u see....
i wish hwee peng was around...

(ok.russell lee and Ms Peh may stop reading here.)

ok.what else..after work, went to gym.many guys.just ignore.
determined to lose weight.haha.
im eating green tea mooncake now.not nice. dun taste like mooncake.
ok la.nth else to say.
gonna miss out on SAS's futsal tourney cuz can't make it in time.
anyway, i do hope to stay at the office longer. go home so early for wot.
and got free time, think more.

P.S. i promise not to seek for any help or whatsoever from J during this internship period.
Have to learn to be independent. Can't depend on anyone forever. =)

sigh.sorry for the long pause..........................................................
5 months later, the pause decided that it has to stop. because it doesn't want to be remembered as a pause but as a comma!!
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, commas reign!!
commas mean there's more to come!
anticipate!

well, here's a brand new dorko.i mean, brand new dorko blog.
hah.
dorko's still the same, and i hope that dorko remains as good as she was.
of cos, embrace change! but only the positive ones.
however, sometimes you cannot consciously differentiate which are the positive or negatives ones until they seap into your subconscious and make you realise that hey, that's positive!

ok.but i will feel sad if i see my fren having changed into another person.well.

however much i dislike 2E, which is really minimal, cuz we get on well most of the time, i really think we are a great class.
tell me, which class will show a united front in asking for delayed datelines?
ok, well, for this issue, i guess every class may show the same united front...but hey!
we are 2E!!!!
E stands for emphatic! woohoooo!!!!!
E stands for everlasting!!! woohooooo!!!!
E stands for enough!
hah.
well, every thing has an 'enough' to it right?
like now.
the 'enough' time has come.
we have had 'enough' of one another and we have to make new frens.
sigh.
it's tiring and sometimes, 'enough' just isn't enough.
so, enough about the 'enough'!!!!!
e.n.o.u.g.h. is starting to look like an alien word now.
who was the one who decided that e.n.o.u.g.h. means enough and sounds like enough?
can h.g.u.o.n.e be pronounced as enough?

see, its all human.
that's why! each human has control over whatever the human is!
we must have control of ourselves!!!
we have to master ourselves!

im v tired now.
i din submit the pics to jesvin.
really.i dont think i deserve it.
don't give me what i dun think i deserve ok.
otherwise i will get big-headed and think of myself as........erm.....something great.
and i think pple who take what they do not deserved only shows the ugly side of themselves.
really.
dun be greedy.
you will not be satisfied that way.
haha.

sorry jesvin.
i find it hard to look at someone in the eye and say sorry, unless it's a special someone.
but jesvin is quite special right.
her special quote is always either, 'she cannot draw lah' or 'tell you how many times to use your right brain, in the end still using your left.'
not quoted directly from jesvin but that's what she means.
well i din say its a bad thing, as long as i think its a form of motivation!!!

ok.
im gg to slp.

Creativity and mental illness

Dr. Daniel Nettle, a psychologist at Newcastle University, and
Helen Clegg, at the Open University in Milton Keynes in the
U.K., have carried out an interesting survey on schizophrenics.
This form of mental ill-health is so debilitating that those
with the condition are often socially isolated, have trouble
maintaining relationships and consequently reproduce at a much
lower rate than the general population. However, cases of
schizophrenia remain high--perhaps 1% of the population. "On
the face of it, Darwinism would suggest that the genes leading
to schizophrenia would eventually disappear from the gene
pool," said Dr. Nettle. The word is that they don't disappear.
They may have gone underground.

And just who are these silent "carriers"? In the survey,
schizophrenics, regular folks, and yep, artists were tested. In
425 responses, they found that artists and schizophrenics
scored equally high on "unusual cognition," a trait that gives
rise to the tendency to feel in between reality and a dream
state, or to feel overwhelmed by one's own thoughts. But the
artists and schizophrenics scored very differently on something
else called "introvertive anhedonia"--social withdrawal and
emotional emptiness. Unlike schizophrenics, artists, in line
with the general population, scored very low on this one.
According to Dr. Nettle, the results suggest that the
creativity of some artists is fuelled by the unique world-view
that mental illness can provide, but without the debilitating
part. Indeed, by directing their energy into artistic projects,
these artists may be sidestepping their schizophrenic
tendencies. Furthermore, the second part of the survey found
that compared with the general population, artists claimed to
have had twice as many partners since the age of 18--and the
number of partners increased with the seriousness with which
they pursued their art.

Dr. Nettle believes that this provides an answer to some
long-asked questions. Some of the genes that predispose to
schizophrenia might be carried by artists--and in many cases
will play a part in directing their creativity--but because
artists tend also not to develop full-blown schizophrenia, they
simply pass the bad genes onto their kids. Artists' unusual
take on the world and their ability to channel creativity,
makes them desirable and therefore likely to be good breeders.
In other words, artists, especially those who stand out, are in
themselves aphrodisiacs.

PS: "What a pile of crap. Don't expect honesty from artists at
any time. Massive delicate egos and a myopic view of reality
don't make for any kind of study. Artists aren't that special."
(Dinos Chapman, The Guardian, U.K.)

Esoterica: Whenever artists' legendary hanky-panky is
mentioned, as it often is, names like Picasso are dragged out.
Fact is he was a complex of guilt, drive, manipulation, ego,
sublimation and libido. But I'm wondering if a lot of artists
might be unusually chaste. Somehow, so many of us just seem too
busy. As usual, I could be wrong. I love being wrong. "I put my
orgasms on canvas." (Pablo Picasso)

Curious morning syndrome

At the risk of once more dividing the world into two main kinds
of people, there are two main kinds of people: There are those
who amuse themselves, and those who require others to amuse
them. It's been my experience that artists are pretty much of
the former kind. In their self-amusement, they're apt to be
creative.

Mornings can have special significance for these folks. They
don't need to stay in bed awaiting the amusements to
arrive--they're already there. They simply need to step into
the amusement area. For many artists, "Curious Morning
Syndrome," or CMS, primes the pump for productivity and
success. The blessing, of course, is not always evident to the
young. Sleeping-in has ruined many an early career. And some
folks must wait until middle or old age for CMS to kick in.
Some think it's a gene. I think it's a habit. I had to learn
it.

It's a matter of setting yourself up to be curious about the
outcome and potential of yesterday's efforts. Always leave
something unfinished when you shut down the studio at night.
Better still, leave several things unfinished. The easier, the
more enjoyable the task, the more the likelihood of an early
morning kick-off. At the same time, difficult challenges and
problematic passages are often best attacked when you are well
rested and fresh. While many work well late into the night, the
cold grey light of dawn presents opportunities to the prepared
worker. Surprises are uncommonly common to the curious at all
times. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it has been
responsible for birthing a lot of art. "How is this going to
turn out?" is an essential question that an artist must ask.
Curiosity tramples drudgery and fires up improvisation.
Curiosity sets the hands and mind in motion. Self-amusement
becomes the "muse."

Every day is a new birth and a metaphor for life--a relentless
carousel with a joyous song and a view for every rotation. CMS
is not just a matter of getting into the work area before the
telephones of normal business hours begin to jingle. CMS means
allowing your own unique "owned processes" to draw you there.
Thus the miracle of creativity is regularly reborn. To see your
world, your studio and the things of your hands within it,
first thing, like a child, with baby eyes.

PS: "The child is curious. He wants to make sense out of
things, find out how things work, gain competence and control
over himself and his environment, and do what he can see other
people doing. He is open, perceptive, and experimental." (John
Holt)

Esoterica: It's also been my observation that artists who allow
themselves to be dependent on others don't thrive in the same
way that the independent ones do. Part of the reason is that
dependent people often don't seem to have enough time for an
inner life and private curiosity. Furthermore, it looks to me
like the independents are the most alive, the most
experimental, and often the most productive. Some of them are
quiet, but they are not bored, nor are they boring. In the
words of journalist Ellen Parr: "The cure for boredom is
curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity."
